Is your top-class YouTube video failing to get any views or engagement? It’s probably because you need to build an audience…
Although it might not seem so, YouTube works similarly to every other social media platform. If you throw up some fabulous content and then crack on with something else, your creativity is wasted. Content won’t drive results on its own. You need to build and grow a loyal following who will view, engage with and share your content, to improve the popularity and credibility of your channel.
On YouTube, your fans can subscribe to your account to follow updates to your content. The more subscriptions you have then the bigger your audience and the better your chance of taking your marketing to the next level on the network.
Here are 6 ways you can pump-up your number of subscriptions and help your YouTube channel to really take off…
1. Ask for Subscribers
Remember that your viewers won’t simply assume that you’d like them to subscribe – don’t be afraid to ask! You can include a call to action within your video that directs your audience to the subscribe button. To do so, ensure you follow these three steps:
- Tell your audience what you would like them to do
- Tell them how to do it
- Give them a benefit of doing so
For example, within or at the end of your video, you could say something like the following:
‘To catch all of my latest video marketing tips, subscribe to my channel by clicking the button below this video.’
2. Use Annotations
Annotations are the speech bubbles, sticky-note style boxes and links that you’ll often notice popping up during YouTube videos. These are added to videos in the YouTube interface after they have been uploaded and they can include links to websites, other videos or directly to a channel subscribe page.
If you place some annotations throughout your video you could make a big difference to the number of subscriptions you receive. You can use annotations in one of two ways:
- Include a call to action within a speech bubble annotation asking your viewers to subscribe.
- Include a call to action within an annotation that links directly to your channel’s subscribe page.
3. Use YouTube Widgets
If you have a large audience following your blog then YouTube widgets are a great way to encourage their further support on your channel. A widget is a button that links directly to your channel’s subscribe page. Add it to your blog post and use it next to your YouTube videos to provide an easy and direct link for your audience.
4. Use Featured Channels
Another way to grow your subscribers is to work in unison with other content-creators on YouTube. Search for channels that feature content similar to yours and have a large following to recommend them in your ‘Featured Channels’ section.
Hopefully, your interest in their channel will be reciprocated and they’ll add you to their ‘Featured Channels’ section. This means you’ll get exposure in front of their audience as well as a good chance of more views and more subscribers heading your way.
If you don’t get much luck from adding channels to your ‘Featured’ section then there’s nothing wrong with sending a polite message to ask.
5. Interact
Remember to treat YouTube like the social network that it is and use it not only as a platform to host your videos but as a base for creating a community.
To boost the exposure of your content, interact with others in the wider YouTube community. This means showing a genuine interest in other content relevant to yours, leaving comments, liking videos and subscribing. It’s simple – give out value and you have a good chance of receiving it.
6. Share Your Goals
Get in touch with your followers across your other social media platforms and ask them to extend their support to your YouTube channel. Include a goal to increase the power of your call to action even further.
This method is also known as a ‘payoff’. Follow these steps for effective results:
- Decide on a goal number of subscribers you would like to achieve. e.g. 300.
- State how your subscribers will benefit if you reach this number, e.g. a giveaway, a new video
- Share the news of your payoff across social media
