Last year saw talk that Facebook was on its way out and that apps such as Whatsapp and Snapchat were taking a stronger hold in the young market. Yet, what these strong claims about Facebook’s ‘death’ actually boiled down to is that the network was losing just a small percentage of its younger audience and might have become just a little less ‘cool’, so to speak.
In fact, what the studies showed is that despite a small drop in younger audiences, Facebook remains the no.1 social network among teenagers in 30 countries. That is besides the fact that while the network might be saying goodbye to its teens, it is saying hello to an older generation, as the percentage of users aged 55-64 rose from 39% to 45% last year.
Anyway, forget all these small stats and percentages, it is still staring us marketers in the face that 500million people across the globe are Facebook users, with 250million people logging in everyday, firmly situating the network as the second most popular worldwide website and the number one social media site. Facebook might be entering its tenth year but it’s still going strong and our Facebook marketing should follow in suit.
To help you get more Facebook likes and drive more results from your page in 2014, here are 5 top tips:
How to Get More Facebook Likes
1. How’s Your Profile Looking?
Imagine logging into your Facebook page on a cold January afternoon to find a ‘Happy Halloween’ banner. Wow, embarrassing – don’t get into one of those situations! Keep a check on how your profile looks to ensure your brand appears active, relevant and professional. This also includes your information: can your potential customers still reach you on that phone number and do you still open 7 days a week? We know, these small details can go amiss when you’re hard at work building an audience and pushing for results from your page, but take the time to stay on top of things and your profile will appear all the more ‘likeable’.
Aside from keeping your page up to date, you’ll want to ensure that it is full to bursting point in the first place. That is, enter all the information relevant to your business, for all the options that Facebook gives you. The more you tell Facebook, the better Facebook will know how to feature you in searches and the more your audience will know about you. Plus, make sure your branding is consistent, from your profile picture to your banner, to any other company-related images and videos you feature on your page.
Look professional and you’ll be recognisable, making your page all the more credible and increasing your opportunity of getting likes.
2. Reach out for Support
There is no shame in asking around for support from your friends, colleagues, business partners and even clients or customers. After all, if you have a good relationship with these people and they know the worth of your business then their ‘like’ is a genuine sign of approval. You can ask in person, at the end of emails, create a specific email campaign or use Facebook to invite these people to ‘like’ your page. There’s also the opportunity to use your other social media channels to promote your page or to offer something to your audience in return for a like, such as a freebie or entry into a competition.
3. Use Social Plugins
To get likes directly from your blog or website, add Facebook’s social plugins. This way you’re making it easy for your audience to show their support for your brand, via your page, without them even having to visit. These plugins enable you to include a feed of your recent posts or just a ‘like’ button.
4. Use Graph Search
Introduced at the beginning of 2013 and yet still majorly under-used by marketers, Facebook Graph search is a tool that enables users to discover various information about audiences. Most importantly, marketers can use this tool to find out the interests of their target audience and of the audiences of other products or services on Facebook that are similar to their business. An example of a use of Graph Search would be to search: ‘Favourite interests of people who like Starbucks and live in Cardiff’ and Facebook would show results that might inform you that this audience like shopping, pizza and Marilyn Monroe.
Essentially, you can use Graph Search to tailor the content that you share with your audience, for better targeting and for a better opportunity of stimulating engagement. The more your audience engage, the more their interactions with your brand will show up in their feeds to their friends, improving your audience reach and increasing your chance of attracting likes.
5. Advertise on Facebook
By incorporating some ads into your Facebook strategy, you can reach a much wider audience. With Facebook’s many options for audience selection, you can fine-tune your target group to age, location and interests, allowing you to show ads of Facebook posts or your page to a very relevant audience. Getting your content or your brand in front of a larger relevant audience is a great way to drive more traffic to your page and in turn, improve your chances of getting likes.
