*scrolling down the Facebook News Feed*
“Oh look, there’s another picture of his dinner and yes, there she is arguing with her sister and there he goes again, ranting off about the football.”
*scroll, scroll, scroll…*
“Urgh another video of her ugly cat…I don’t feel the need to hear every detail about his job problems…I cannot bear another soppy status about her new boyfriend!”
We might choose our friends on Facebook but that doesn’t mean their updates are always to our taste. Facebook’s previous answer to this was the option to ‘Hide All’ updates from specific users, directly from the news feed and this function is now to be re-labelled as an ‘Unfollow’ button.
As with the ‘Hide All’ feature, users can ‘Unfollow’ Facebook friends to block their content from appearing in the news feed. In other words, you can still keep an eye on your ex, check out that creepy guy from school who’s grown a beard and stay in touch with your extremely loud auntie from the other end of the globe, but you don’t have to witness any of their irritating posts.
Plus, Facebook friends aren’t alerted when they’ve been unfollowed so you won’t be causing any offence to your mum who shares an overload of “hilarious” videos that are quite frankly, not hilarious, or to that someone who thought they were “in there”.
A Facebook spokesperson has commented, “The goal of this change is to help people curate their News Feed and see more of the content they care about”. The word choice takes a leaf out of the books of Twitter and Pinterest – both platforms which use ‘unfollow’ – and is likely to make the option much clearer to Facebook users.
Did you forget about the beauty of this tool? Well, you know what to do – get unfollowing and say goodbye to those updates that you really don’t want to come across during your hourly news feed scroll.
